ROSA JOHAN UDDOH- ARTIST LECTURE

Before this lecture, I was aware of this artist’s work as I had seen her on the Liverpool Biennial website. I Enjoyed the lecture she presented as I could relate to her work a lot through my own studies. I was interested in the fact she explores an over-identification with places, objects or celebrities in British popular culture, decolonisation, and the effects of this on self-esteem.
After the lecture, I decided to take it upon myself to research more about her work online and I stumbled across these pieces, some which I enjoy and some I don’t.
The piece below is called ‘English Pastoral’, although I think this piece is aesthetically pleasing, I couldn’t find any relation to my studies in these style pieces she created. However, I would like to combine Photoshop and edited images in my work as I think they are different and quirky especially compared to the work I would normally feel most comfortable doing (eg. paints, sketches).
The piece I enjoyed the most is ‘Obama’. Throughout my studies and practice lately, I have been experimenting with objects a lot more than my usual approach to a 2D piece I would normally study. I enjoy this piece because it is so simple yet so effective to the viewer. Uddoh has created an approximate life-size clay model of Barack Obama’s Ear. I enjoyed this piece because although it is rough looking and so effortlessly made, I like the ideas I get when I see this piece. One of my thoughts was wondering if this piece was created of his ear to symbolize the fact he listened to his country and through listening he offered his country a lot more than most presidents? I like the idea of something so small captivating an audience into wondering what the piece could possibly mean.
